Cowra’s distinct place in Australian history has created a culture of reconciliation that resonates through the town. You only have to be in town for the annual Festival of International Understanding, held every March, to see how committed the townspeople are about making the future a more tolerant place.
This passion for peace and international understanding was officially recognised when the town was awarded the Australian World Peace Bell. This is a replica of the World Peace Bell located in the forecourt of the United Nation’s headquarters in New York. Usually, Peace Bell replicas are only awarded to a nation’s capital.
Our Bell, located in a pavilion in Cowra’s Civic Square on Darling Street, is decorated with pottery tiles reflecting the community’s ideas about world peace. It is the focus of Cowra’s World Peace Day commemorations on the 3rd Tuesday in September each year. On this day, Peace Bells throughout the world ring out to mark the opening of the Disarmament Session.
At the site of the Peace Bell, you can listen to the informative audio stream and learn the story of the Bell and its significance to our community. We’re proud of our dedication to a more peaceful world, and hope you’ll be inspired, too.
