History

Early in 19The Cowra Hotel during flooding in 197437, Wordsworth’s store on the corner of Lachlan and Kendal Street was demolished to make way for a new hotel building.
Named “The Cowra”, all materials for the building were obtained locally.
The main entrance to the hotel was through the swinging doors opening from Kendal Street into the foyer and office, this area being highlighted by a brilliant chandelier.
An elaborately equipped dining room to seat fifty people and a public bar 40 feet in length was fitted with a refrigerator. The exterior walls were of deep cream tiles touched with brown, and bordered by black tiles.
Special “Essee” stoves were installed to provide heat in winter and a generously arranged system of electric fans for summer coolness.
The hotel was opened for business on the 8th of September 1937 shortly after 1 pm, with Mr. AB Caldecott as licensee. The Cowra District band played lively tunes while hard working staff were kept busy for the first hour due to all drinks being on the house.
