Canowindra

A stroll through the historic township of Canowindra (pronounced Ca-noun-dra) is like stepping in to a period movie dotted with the wonders of modern living. Beautifully restored guesthouses, country pubs and quaint shops filled with old wares are nestled alongside art galleries, cafes with great coffee and designer clothes and homewares shops. It’s a destination worth driving to: Canowindra is just 33km north of Cowra (about a 20-minute drive).

The word “Canowindra” is derived from the Wiradjuri word meaning home, and you’ll certainly feel right at home as you walk the heritage listed Main Street.

At the end of the main street is the spectacular Age of Fishes Museum, home to an incredible 360 year old fossil collection and travelling exhibitions, as well as the Visitor Information Centre. From the Museum, travel up Ferguson Street to more shops featuring antiques and giftware, art and local wine tasting straight from the vineyards of Canowindra. With consistent production of premium, award-winning wines, the local vineyards have been causing a stir in the wine world: their quiet approach to excellence has taken the larger wineries by surprise. See what all the fuss is about for yourself at the local cellar doors which offer wine tastings and sales. The area is also known for its excellent food. Every April the town hosts a 100 Mile Dinner, when long tables overhung with colourful lanterns are set along the heritage listed crooked main street for a communal feast of exceptional regional produce and wines sourced from within a 100 mile radius. The 100 Mile concept is all about acting localy and thinking globally - proving that eating locally produced food is good for the planet, the local economy and your taste-buds

For visitors who enjoy a flight of fancy, Canowindra is recognised as the Ballooning Capital of Australia. For years, hot air balloon enthusiasts have found the climate and topography, not to mention the scenery, in Canowindra perfect for ballooning. Today, you can book your very own balloon flight and get a bird’s eye view of the area. It’s the only way to start the day.
